Montreal trades Guillaume Latendresse to Minnesoa for Benoit Pouliot.

A good deal for both teams as they swap once-promising youngsters in the hopes that a change of scenery will ignite a fire.

Fantasy Breakdown:

Guillaume Latendresse:
Latendresse stormed onto the scene in 2006-2007, scoring 16 goals as a 19 year-old. A big winger with good speed, Guillaume used his size to bang bodies and create space for him and his linemates. Latendresse has since battled injuries and hasn't progressed from that impressive rookie year. He has struggled this year with just 2 goals and 1 assist in 23 games averaging just 11:23 of ice-time a night.

Advice:
The change of scenery should help as he will no longer have to play under the microscope of Montreal. Watch him over the next few weeks to see if he can regain his confidence.

Benoit Pouliot:
The 2005 4th overall pick has developed at a snail's pace. Pouliot was tabbed as a poor man's Vincent Lecavalier in his draft year, a lanky, skilled centre that just needed to add some muscle. Although he never scored more then 65 points in the OHL, Pouliot was viewed as a late-bloomer who projected well as an NHLer. Since the draft, he has struggled to put up points at any level. Benoit had his best year statistically in the AHL last season with 24 points in 30 games. He earned a regular spot with the Wild this year but has struggled to take advantage of the opportunity with just 4 points in 14 games - averaging a mere 6:58 of ice-time.

Advice:
A quick start in Montreal could save his career, but we're betting against it. Keep an eye on Pouliot but he should be in the AHL by January.

Just Fantasy Hockey - Week 5 Forecaster

Week 5 is one of the busier weeks in fantasy hockey this year. So many games owners have lots of good choices in players to play on their rosters.

4 Game week
Islanders, Rangers, Canadiens, Maple Leafs, Capitals, Avalanche, Wild, Canucks and Coyotes.

3 Game week
Devils, Penguins, Bruins, Sabres, Senators, Hurricanes, Panthers, Blackhawks, Blue Jackets, Red Wings, Predators, Blues, Oilers, Ducks, Stars and Sharks.

2 Game week
Flyers, Thrashers, Lightning, Flames and Kings.

Washington: Philadelphia, @ Atlanta, New York Islanders, Columbus.
Look for a great offensive week from Ovechkin and company this week. It should be a high scoring affair against Philly to start off the week followed by three weaker opponents in the Thrashers, Isles and Jackets.
Fantasy spin: Theodore will likely see at least one game this week as the Capitals have no need to rush him back. Varlamov should be benched against Philly since they have shown they could hit the twine against any team. Play all your offensive Caps with confidence.

Toronto: @Anaheim, @ Dallas, @ Buffalo, @Montreal.
The forecast does not look good for the Maple Leafs. Maybe some time away from the pressure pot at the ACC and some time to gel as a team is what the doctor ordered for the struggling Leafs.
Fantasy spin: Owners should choose quality over quantity for leagues having weekly roster changes. With so many teams playing 4 games there are better options.

NY Rangers: Phoenix, @New York Islanders, @Minnesota, Boston.
Surprisingly, the Rangers rank 3rd overall in goals per game and should have no trouble continuing their hot start. The week starts off hard against the number 1 defense in the league but ends with games with teams in the bottom third of Goals Against. Although the offence should have a very solid week, it is Lundqvist who might be the biggest play of the week. With all four teams the Rangers face having difficulty finding the net the Ranger net minder is set for a huge fantasy week.
Fantasy spin: Look for Gaborik and Prospal to continue scoring and Lundqvist to have a very solid week.

Montreal: New York Islanders, @Pittsburgh, @Chicago, Toronto
The most impactful fantasy story coming out of Montreal this week will be the goaltending situation. No question with Price’s poor play of late that Halak is the primary goaltender for now. The question is whether Price can play his way back into the net with Halak playing so well.
Fantasy spin: With two easy games at home and two tough ones away from the Bell Centre, look for the goaltending saga to continue after this week. Halak and Price should split time in net with the better of the two holding the edge on who will start the following week.

Colorado: @Edmonton, @Calgary, @San Jose, @Vancouver.
Not a favourable forecast for the up and coming Av’s, with four difficult games against conference rivals on the road. Anderson has played extremely well for Colorado, but this week should be a good indication on whether if he can take the next step.
Fantasy spin: Currently Edmonton, Calgary and San Jose sit first, second, or eighth in Goals per game respectively, so no one will blame you for sitting Anderson this week.

Nashville: @Minnesota, Chicago, Dallas
Not much going on for the Predators offensively as they sit dead last in goals scored, but the goaltending scenario seems to be finding its way here. Look for Ellis to start against Minnesota and Dallas and Rinne, who played just horrid against the Senators last week, to start against the offensive Blackhawks.
Fantasy spin: Ellis has a chance to distance himself against Rinne. If Ellis has a strong week, he definitely has the upper hand.

Just Fantasy Hockey - Week 4 Goalie Report

Hot

Tim Thomas: After allowing 6 goals against the Ducks and sitting the next two games, he came back and shut out the Stars in Dallas. Posting a very respectable 2.00 GAA and .935 SV% and 1 shut out over the last 7 days gives Thomas a nod on the hot list this week.

Pascal Leclaire: With two starts and two wins later, we are seeing what a healthy Leclair can do in a good week. Allowing just one goal in each of his contests against the Habs and Lightning, and posting a stellar .956 SV%, a healthy Leclaire remains a must start in any fantasy format.

Marc-Andre Fleury: The hottest team and the hottest goalie go hand in hand. Fleury keeps on rolling with strong performances last week, making big saves when he was called upon. Winning both his starts and posting a 1.00 and .957 GAA and SV% respectively makes Fleury the top net minder this week.

Cold

Dwayne Roloson: It’s hard to fault anyone playing between the pipes for the Islanders this year. Getting pulled halfway through a game after allowing 4 goals on 12 shots deserves to be on the cold side. Roloson will get a few wins since the Islanders are an improving team, but should suffer in the GAA and SV% categories. Avoid him if you can.

Jonas Hiller: Although he played well in his last outing, stopping 34 of the 37 shots, Hiller struggled by allowing 3 goals on 12 shots. With a 4.26 GAA and .878 SV%, he finished the week with no wins on 2 stars. Look for Hiller to continue to get starts as J.S Giguere is currently out due to injury and Hiller will still get time in net to correct his course.

Carey Price: After allowing 3 goals against the Avalanche on 23 shots and 3 goals against the offensively challenged Senators, Halak got the call to start. He played tremendously allowing just a single goal. Price’s cold week could have triggered a tandem situation in Montreal, keep Price on a short leash for now.

Other mentionables: Craig Anderson and Ilya Bryzgalov continue on the upward rise. They continue to play at a high level each night and are rewarding their owners with amazing stats. Keep riding their streak until they shows signs of faultering.

Washington vs Detroit
J Theodore (WAS) stopped 34 shots and looks to be in the lead as the number 1 goalie.
D Cleary (DET) played over 18 minutes, had 5 shots and 1 assist. Pick him up on your waiver wire.

New Jersey vs Florida
T Zajac (NJD) has 5 points in 4 games and playing more than 20 minutes a game. Good option for a depth center.
D Clarkson (NJD) has 4 points in 4 games and 6 PIMs. He is a good depth guy in a roto league.
T Vokoun (FLA) stopped 38 shots and was stellar but will struggle to put up decent numbers.

NY Islanders vs Boston
J Tavares (NYI) had 1 goal, 1 assist and 4 shots. With 5 points in 3 games, it’s a great start to the season.
M Hunwick (BOS) scored 1 goal and 1 assist and should be considered as a depth defenceman.
D Krejci (BOS) has 0 points in 4 games. Boston is struggling to find chemistry right now.

Anaheim vs Philadelphia
T Selanne (ANA) scored both Anaheim goals, now has 4 goals in 4 games. He can still snipe.
J Hiller (ANA) stopped 36 shots and looked solid. He still should tandem with Giggy for now.
M Carle (PHI) has 8 points in 4 games and plays on the PP with Pronger, grab him now.
C Giroux (PHI) moved from 3rd line center to playing right wing with Richards and Gagne. Expect more production from him.

Atlanta vs Ottawa
B Little (ATL) as 4 points in 3 games and is the only other Thrasher that is contributing other than Kovalchuk.
M Fisher (OTT) has 4 points and 7 PIMs in 4 games and is finally adding secondary scoring. Keep an eye on him.
A Picard (OTT) has 3 points, 4 PIMs and is +4 in 4 games. He is the only Senator d-man contributing on the score sheet.

Pittsburgh vs Toronto
S Crosby, E Malkin and S Gonchar (PIT) are Leaf killers. They combined for 7 points.
J Staal (PIT) played with wing with Malkin for some shifts. His value could increase slightly if this becomes a regular thing.
V Toskala (TOR) takes another loss and has horrible numbers. He has no fantasy value at this time.

Carolina vs Tampa Bay
C Ward (CAR) had 34 saves in the loss as Carolina struggles to score goals.
J Jokinen (CAR) has 5 points in 5 games. He has limited value and should only be considered in deep leagues.
R Malone (TAM) scored a hat-trick and should only be considered a depth player if available.
P Ranger (TAM) had a goal and an assist. He has offensive tendencies and may help in deeper leagues.

Buffalo vs Nashville
R Miller (BUF) stopped all 25 shots for his first shut-out. He looked extremely sharp.
T Myers (BUF) spent time on the PP and should be the quarter-back before too long. Keep an eye on him if he is available.
P Rinne (NAS) stopped 41 shots and held the Sabres to 1 goal. Look for him to start again soon.

Los Angeles vs St. Louis
J Quick (LAK) stopped 29 shots and is the Kings number 1 goalie. He has a 3-1 record and if he is available should be picked up.
R. Smyth (LAK) and A. Kopitar continue to make a potent scoring tandem. They could have career seasons.
B Boyes (STL) had 8 shots on net but was held off the scoresheet. Keep playing your Blues as they are bound to break-out sooner rather than later.

Colorado vs Chicago
C Anderson (COL) continues to carry the Aves and is making superb saves. If your league rewards GAA and Save %, grad him if he is available.
W Wolski (COL) and K Quincey have 5 points in 4 games. They are deadly on the powerplay and should not be available in any league.
K Versteeg (CHI) now has 6 points in 4 games. He is getting top PP time and playing on the top 2 lines.
C Huet (CHI) continues to struggle, look for Niemi to get a start soon.

Columbus vs Phoenix
M Garon (CLB) gets the shut-out in his first start. He will not displace Mason as the number 1 guy, no worries.
R Klesla (CLB) has 4 points in 4 games and 8 PIMs. Look at him as a depth defenceman in deeper leagues.
R Vrbata (PHO) has 4 points in 4 games and had 5 shots on goal. Keep an eye on him or take a flyer if he is available.

Montreal vs Edmonton
C Price (MON) falls to a 2-2 record and hasn’t played well on the Western roadtrip. Look for Halak to get the call in goal soon.
B Gionta (MON), S Gomez and M Cammalleri continue to produce for the Habs. Other Canadiens are struggling to produce.
M Comrie (EDM) has 4 points in 4 games and is playing the second line center role. Keep an eye on him in deeper leagues.

Minnesota vs San Jose
A Brunette (MIN) and E Belanger both have 5 points in 4 games. They are quietly producing as top 6 players.
J Demers (SJS) is playing as the 6th defenceman and has 3 points in 5 games. Keep an eye on him at this point only.
P Marleau (SJS) has 5 goals and 1 assist in 5 games. He looks rejuvenated and must be started in all leagues.

Montreal Signs Marc-Andre Bergeron

The Montreal Canadiens have signed defenceman Marc-Andre Bergeron to a 1year contract.

With the injuries to Markov and O’Byrne, GM Bob Gainey needed to make a move to solidify the Habs blueline. By bringing in Bergeron, the Canadiens acquire a 28 year old with a booming slapslot that will help mostly on the powerplay.

Bergeron will require some conditioning in the AHL before he can contribute in any manner. He is worth a waiver pick-up in deeper leagues as he should take Markov’s time on the powerplay until he gets back from injury.

NHL New aand Notes - October 3

Now that the Stanley Cup banner has been raised and Canadian icon Joe Sakic has his number retired in the Pepsi Center in Colorado, we can concentrate on what has already transpired in the first 2 days of hockey.

Andrei Markov (D) – MON – A lacerated tendon has sidelined the All-star defenceman for 3-4 months. Markov came into contact with Carey Price’s skate and immediately limped off the ice. This is a devastating injury for the Canadiens and will be in tough to replace the leadership and points from Markov. Look for Spacek and Hamrlik to get added powerplay time. The Habs have also called up young offensive d-man Yannick Weber. Put a claim in on him as he will get plenty of PP time.

Craig Anderson (G) – COL – The new number one in Colorado came up big on Joe Sakic night. Stopping 38 out of 40 shots, Anderson looked unstoppable as the game wore on. If Anderson is available in your league take a long look at him. He will get a lot of shots each night and will have to be at the top of his game to get wins on the young Avalanche team.

Brooks Laich (C) – WAS – Scoring 2 points and 1 assist and lining up with the top gunners (AO and Backstrom) on the powerplay, Laich seized his opportunity. If he is available in you league, snatch him up on the waiver wire. He may not always play on the top line, but he will provide enough offense to garner a spot on your bench as a depth player.

Tomas Vokoun (G) – FLA – The veteran goalie was the catalyst for the Panthers as he saw 55 shots on goal and stopped 52 of them. A talented goaltender, Vokoun is the undeniable number one guy in Florida. He will see a lot of shots this season and will either be the hero or the goat. See if there are other goaltending options in your league as Vokoun should lose more than he wins.

Ray Emery (G) – PHI – His first full season game back in the league since he bolted for Russia. In what appeared to be an easy game for the Flyers, Emery stopped all 27 shots. The Flyers are hoping for Emery to be a stable and consistent goaltender this year and their success rests on it.

Brandon Dubinsky (C) – NYR – The newly re-signed centerman has some veteran wingers to help elevate his game. Lining up with Gaborik and Prospal, Dubinsky is the top center in New York and should get points playing with Gabby. If he is available in your league grab him on the waiver wire and hold onto hi until Gaborik gets hurt.

Training Camp Notes: September 27

Carey Price (G) – MON – The young netminder is looking to be in top form already this preseason. Price turned away 29 Buffalo shots and came away with a 3-2 victory. It appears that Price has worked hard this off-season to improve on some of his flaws in his very technical approach to playing goal. Look for Price to come out solid and be challenged by back-up Jaroslav Halak for the starting role. A tandem situation is still a possibility is Price struggles.

Jimmy Howard (G) – DET – The 25 year old has finally been able to crack the Red Wings line-up. Although still pegged as the back-up, Howard should play on a more regular basis than a traditional back-up. Veteran Osgood doesn’t appear he can handle the rigors of a full schedule any longer which will push Howard into more of a tandem role. Draft Howard late in rounds of your draft as he now has increased fantasy value, especially if you can change you goalies on a daily basis.

Chris Mason (G) – STL – The Blues are on the way back up and their goaltending has never been so strong. The Blues blanked the Stars 5-0 last night and mason was on top of his game. Stopping all 29 shots, the 33 year old goaltender is heading into the season as the top guy in ST. Louis. Mason is a solid choice, however Ty Conklin is a more than capable back-up that with challenge Mason for starts. If you draft Mason, grab Conklin as well, as the Blues will be playing the hot guy in net.

Martin Brodeur (G) – NJD - The veteran back-stopped the Devils to a 1-0 win over the high flying Flyers stopping all 21 shots. The 37 year old shows no signs of slowing down and is looking to break Terry Sawchucks shutout record this year. Brodeur is an elite keeper and the best goalie to ever play the game.

The Deep Sleeper

So, you’ve scanned through your fantasy magazines and websites to compile a list of sleepers for this upcoming season. Every list you have read may have two or three different players on it, but you’ll notice that there are several players that make each list. Let’s call them the “Trendy Sleepers.”

The “Trendy Sleepers” are easy to call. They are players who have:

* Finished the 08-09 season strong – Rich Peverly, ATL
* Dominated in the AHL or Europe last season - Jonas Gustavsson, TOR
* Should play a bigger role with their club based on their team losing higher depth chart players via free agency or trade – Ville Leino, DET
* Hot shot rookies who could be ready to contribute – Cody Hodgson, VAN

If you have read several fantasy publications, or visited fantasy websites like JFH, these players are already household names. The problem is, every GM in your draft wants these guys and usually drafts them a few rounds too early. So to get them, you end up “reaching” with a pick that should be used on a sure thing.

In this article, we want to give you a list of Deeper Sleepers. These are guys who may fall into any of the four categories above, but they have done it under the fantasy radar. You won’t find these guys in your average sleeper list, but they could end up being just as, if not more, productive this season.

James Wisniewski (D) – ANA - Wisniewski played only 48 games last season, split between Chicago and Anaheim, after recovering from off-season surgery. Wisniewski finished strong with Anaheim and ended up with a total 24 points in 48 games. At 25, he is already part of the Ducks top 4 and contributes with PIMS as well. Grab him in the last few rounds of your draft or quickly snatch him off the FA list.

Fearless Forecast – 75GP, 9G, 28A, 37P, 95PIMS

Vladimir Sobotka (C) – BOS - Sobotka has been a productive player in the AHL the past few seasons but has been buried on the Bruins’ depth chart. With Kessel moved to Toronto and Krejci rehabbing off-season surgery, Sobotka finds himself with a spot in the productive top 9. At 22, Sobotka still has a lot of untapped potential and could be a steal by season’s end.

Fearless Forecast – 74GP, 19G, 20A, 39P

John Moore (D) – CLB - The 21st pick in the June Draft, Moore is looking to make the huge jump straight from the USHL to the NHL. He has been all the talk at the Jackets’ training camp and already has NHL size and speed. Moore is a fantastic skater who is a threat to jump in the rush at any time. He looks like a younger Mike Green at times, including the odd defensive gaffe. If he does make the club he could produce decent numbers, however even if he is sent down, he is a lot closer to the NHL than originally thought. Grab him in keeper leagues and hope he sticks.

Fearless Forecast – 9GP, 1G, 2A, 3P (*Returned to Kitchener after 9 games)

Jamie Benn (LW) – DAL - Benn has been on fire this pre-season and has looked uber-comfortable playing with Mike Ribeiro. His play is forcing the team to give him a longer look on one of the top two lines. Benn was the best player in the WHL last year, scoring 46 goals in just 56 games with Kelowna. The Stars have some great playmakers but don’t have a lot of finish around the net. Benn could immediately take advantage of that and become a go to sniper in Big D. Snatch him up if he is still a FA in your league.

Fearless Forecast – 75GP, 22G, 21A, 43P

Max Pacioretty (LW) – MON - “Patches” looked very good in his 34 game call-up with the big club last night. A speedy, power forward, Max should take advantage of some open roster spots and contribute for the Habs this year. Not a roster lock, he will be an early call-up and will find ways to score. Keep an eye on him as a FA. Target him in keeper leagues.

Fearless Forecast – 56GP, 11G, 16A, 27P

Patrick Hornqvist (LW) – NAS - Hornqvist was a “Trendy Sleeper” last year after scoring goals in bunches in Sweden. The adjustment to North America was not easy for Patrick and he found himself going back and forth from the NHL to the AHL. In 28 NHL games, Hornqvist received limited ice-time and put up a mere 2 goals. Coach Barry Trotz needed Hornqvist to become a more complete player and he has responded well this preseason. Lining up on the Preds top line with Arnott and Dumont, Hornqvist has 6 points in 4 games and looks like a different player. Grab him as an FA and hope he can stick on the Preds top line.

Fearless Forecast – 72GP, 23G, 20A, 43P

Niklas Bergfors (RW) – NJD - Bergfors is another player who has been a “Trendy Sleeper” in the past. A talented prospect, Bergfors struggled to put up big numbers in his first two AHL seasons. Things seemed to come easier for him last year in Lowell however, as he put up 51 points in 66 games. The Devils have been patiently waiting for him to develop to enhance their secondary scoring. Bergfors has has a solid pre-season and looks to have locked down a roster spot. How productive he’ll be on a Jacque Lemaire team is the bigger question though.

Fearless Forecast – 68GP, 13G, 16A, 29P

Artem Anisimov (C) – NYR - If you have followed JFH this pre-season, you know how much we love Anisimov. He dominated the AHL as a 20 year-old, using his great size and hockey smarts. Still developing his speed, the lanky pivot has all the tools to be a top-line centre. He looks to have cracked the Rangers' roster as the team’s 4th line centre. He should quietly move up the depth chart as the season progresses and he could be a very productive player in the second half. Grab him off FA before someone else does.

Fearless Forecast – 74GP, 18G, 19A, 37P

Martin Hanzal (C) – PHO - At 22, Hanzal already has two full NHL seasons under his belt. A complete player, Hanzal still has a lot of untapped offensive potential and should get a chance to show it this season. He struggled coming back from off-season back surgery last year but came to training camp in great shape. He lead the Yotes in ice-time last night, the first game under new coach Dave Tippett. Hanzal is the kind of player a coach loves as he can be played in any situation. Look for an offensive spike this year. If he is available, grab him as a solid depth centre.

Fearless Forecast – 82GP, 18G, 31A, 49P

Torrey Mitchell (C) – SJS -Mitchell scored 10 Goals in his rookie season of 2007-2008, impressing Sharks brass with a strong finish to the year. Mitchell though missed all of last season recovering from a broken leg. He did make a cameo in the playoffs last year and showed that he still has his blazing speed. A skilled, two-way pivot, Mitchell could surprise this year and push Joe Pavelski for 2nd line ice-time. Watch his progress early as he could pay huge dividends if he lands on one of the Sharks scoring lines.

Fearless Forecast – 80GP, 17G, 22A, 39P

Viktor Stalberg (LW) – TOR - Stalberg has been the toast of Toronto this September with his outstanding pre-season. Producing 5 goals and 7 points in 7 games, Stalberg looks to be a lock on one of Toronto’s scoring lines. The Big Swede is amazing to watch as he can hit a high gear like few others. His large frame and lightning speed allows him to track down and recover pucks in all three zones. Stalberg can score too as he was a Hobey Baker finalist after sniping 24 goals for Vermont last year. Viktor is effective in any situation, which means he’ll get lots of ice-time under head coach Ron Wilson. If Stalberg is still on your FA wire, consider yourself lucky and grab him before finishing this article.

Fearless Forecast – 70GP, 20G, 17A, 37P

Michal Neuvirth (G) – WAS - Neuvirth was selected 11 picks after Simeon Varlamov in the 2006 Draft. I guess the Caps were hedging their bets on a future #1. Neuvirth has followed Varlamov up the depth chart and was excellent as the #1 in Hershey following Varlamov’s promotion to the big club late last season. While Simeon is getting all the love in fantasy drafts this year, it wouldn’t surprise us to see Neuvirth end the year as the Caps #1. Simeon had a magical ride last season but it didn’t finish well against the Pens. He showed he has holes in his game, and if NHL teams get the scouting report, Varlamov could get sent back down to Hershey to iron them out. Varlamov’s loss would be Neuvirth’s gain. Keep an eye on Varlamov and handcuff him with Neuvirth in keeper leagues.

Training Camp Notes: September 22nd

Kyle Turris (C), PHX - The 3rd overall pick in the 2007 NHL Draft has been sent down to San Antonio for more seasoning. While highly skilled, the knock on Turris has always been his wirey frame and inability to play against NHL-sized Defenceman. The Yotes apparently believe he is not quite there yet as he becomes one of the early surprise demotions to the AHL. After 20 points in 63 NHL games last year, Phoenix may keep Turris in San Antonio and hope he can dominate there before another promotion. Hold on to him in keeper leagues but cut bait in standard leagues.

Evgeni Grachev (C), NYR - Grachev, a 3rd round pick from the 2008 draft, was one of the most dominant players in junior hockey last year. The big Russian put up 80 points in 60 games with the Brampton Battalion, making a smooth transition to North American ice. The 19 year-old has been turning heads at Rangers camp and had an impressive game playing with Anisimov and Callahan last night. Grachev's play may get him an extended look to start the year, however the Rangers will probably send him back to Brampton or down to Hartford (as a European skater, he is eligible to play in the AHL). Watch Grachev's play over the next few weeks and grab him in a keeper league.

Matt Gilroy (D), NYR - The highly sought-after free agent signing is getting lots of pre-season ice-time. Gilroy played 21:34 last night, including 4:51 on the Powerplay. The Rangers are also giving young Defenceman Michael Del Zotto and Bobby Sanguinetti a long look as their PP quarterback, however it is Gilroy who is signed to a large, 1-way contract. Gilroy has looked good this pre-season but I'm not sure he is worth the hype. Watch his minutes in the first 10-15 games as Tortorella may quickly lose patience with Gilroy's run-and-gun defensive play.

Scott Gomez, Brian Gionta & Michael Cammaleri, MON - Watched some of the Penguins/Habs game last night and this newly acquired top line was all over the ice. The three pnit-sized forwards have shown instant chemistry and dynamic speed. Expect all three to have strong years - bouncebacks for both Gomez and Gionta. Draft any of the three pint-sized producers and expect to be rewarded.

Theoren Fleury (RW), CGY- OK, I go out a few days ago and say that Fleury won't do much more then score the shootout winner in his first pre-season game. How does he respond? One goal and two assists over the next two games. Fleury is starting to find his niche in Calgary as a secondary scorer and may actually force Sutter's hand to stay on this roster. At 41, Fleury could be a magical story and provide the Flames with something they have been lacking for years...a scoring threat on the 2nd line. I am still betting against Fleury, but get your popcorn...this is getting interesting.

Northeast Division Sleepers

This series is dedicated to the players that you should take note of during your draft that may fall or otherwise offer you great rewards if you select them.

Boston – Marco Sturm (LW) – Last season ended very early for Sturm. Suffering a season ending injury, he only played in 19 contests. An underrated and skilled winger, Sturm may find time on the top line while the Kessel injury / contract is sorted out. In 19 games last year, Sturm scored 13 points. If he can stay healthy he is a true sleeper pick.

FEARLESS FORECAST – 66 GP – 19 – 26 – 45 PTS

Buffalo – Tim Connolly (C) – This gifted player has been bitten by the injury bug and misses large amounts of time that takes away from his fantasy appeal. When healthy, Connolly is one of the most talented players on the ice most nights. He was healthy for a 45 game stretch at the end of last season and had 47 points in 48 games.

FEARLESS FORECAST – 65 GP – 23 G – 45 A – 68 PTS

Montreal – Andrei Kostistyn – Mired in controversy and under-performing last season, Kostistyn wishes he could forget everything that happened. Looking forward with new group of teammates and coach, the flashy Russian is still a top six forward on the Canadiens. With 41 points in 74 games, Kostistyn will undoubtedly surpass last seasons totals.

FEARLESS FORECAST – 76 GP – 27 G – 31 A – 58 PTS

Ottawa – Chris Campoli – With his health issues finally behind him, Campoli was moved from the worst team in the NHL to a team that welcomed the offensive output from the d-man. Campoli tallied 30 points in 76 games and excelled when he was moved to Ottawa. The future for the powerplay quarterback of the Senators is a bright one.

FEARLESS FORECAST – 80 GP – 13 G – 28 A – 41 PTS

Toronto – Ian White (D) – Initially banned to the press box, White was able to earn Ron Wilson’s trust and played in 71 games and tallied 26 points. With Toronto’s movement towards hard hitting and big bodied defensemen, White stands out to be one of their top offensive d-men. He should once again see time on the powerplay and maybe even at wing at times.

Anaheim Ducks Round-Up

The Anaheim Ducks have signed Saku Koivu to a 1 year, $3.25 Million dollar contract and signed defenceman Nick Boynton a 1 year, $1.5 Million dollar contract.

After a very successful post season run last year the Ducks continue to alter their line-up with the addition of two experienced veterans. The loss of Pronger will hurt the organization as he added leadership and logged a ton of minutes, but had an enormous contract which limited the Ducks in adding depth. Koivu and Boynton will add leadership and a much needed second line center.

Saku Koivu has had to make one of the hardest decisions of his career this off-season. Playing with the Canadiens for 13 seasons, over-coming cancer and not being a french speaking captain for one of the most prestigious teams is just some of the accomplishments of his career. In Anaheim, Koivu will not have the pressure to carry the organization and his stats should reflect that. In 65 games last season, Koivu netted 50 points, a total he should surpass next season playing with Selanne. Keep Koivu on your radar in your draft, as he is a great option for a depth centerman that could end up being a steal.

Nick Boynton is joining his fifth team in his last five seasons and this may be his last kick at the can. A veteran on the blueline, the 30 year old has limited fantasy value. In 68 games last season, Boyton scored 21 points and 91 PIMs. Depending on where he lands on the Anaheim depth chart, Boyton may be worth a pick in deeper leagues or a waiver pick-up.

Senatorial Support

The Ottawa Senators have signed highly talented winger Alexei Kovalev to a 2 year, $10 Million dollar contract and have resigned resident tough guy Chris Neil to a 4 year, $8 Million dollar contract.

The 2009 off-season has been filled with drama for the Senators. The Dany Heatley situation has been the talk of the town and has left the team in turmoil and looking for answers. While working out a deal with the Edmonton Oilers, the Senators dug deep to keep agitator and under performer Chris Neil on the team.

Chris Neil will continue his career with his only professional team he has played with. As a fantasy option, Neil will provide an average of 200 penalty minutes a season and a safe 10–16 points, anything more should be considered a huge bonus. His numbers have declined over the past couple seasons and may do so once again. He will continue to be an agitator in Ottawa but owners should pass on this one-trick-pony on draft day as there are a lot of better options for points and PIMs in deeper leagues.

Alexei Kovalev remains a mystery in the NHL. At times he appears to be one of the most talented players in the league, and at other times, he doesn’t show up to play. With 65 points in 74 games last season in Montreal, Kovalev would rather have just forgot last season existed. At times he was the best player on the team and then was banished to his home on an important road-trip. The question for next season is, what should owners expect when drafting this sniper. At worst he will get you 65 points and may top out around 80 points. A lot now hinges on the pressure he puts on himself, his motivation or lack thereof and linemates.

One thing is assured as a fantasy owner, make sure you dress Kovalev when he plays Montreal next season; he will try and light them up.

Re-tooling the Habs D

The Montreal Canadians have signed Jaroslav Spacek to a 3 year, $11.5 Million deal and Paul Mara to a 1 year, $1.675 Million deal.

July 1st as they envision him as an affordable number 2 Defenceman that can play with Andrei Markov on the Powerplay. The 35 year-old Spacek matched his career high with 45 points last year in Buffalo. He brings a good transition game and a steady defensive presence.

Fantasy Outlook: At 35, Spacek can't be relied upon for big-time minutes in Montreal. He should immediately help their Powerplay and continue to put up decent points. Look for him in the late rounds to shore up your Defence depth.

Fearless Forecast: 75GP, 9G, 31A, 40PTS

Paul Mara

A former 7th overall pick by Tampa in 1997, Mara has great size, decent skill and moves well. After a career high of 47 points with Phoenix in 2005-2006, Mara looked to be one of the bright young Dmen in the league. Since then, Mara has travelled to Boston and New York where he has struggled to stay healthy. He reached 21 points last season which was his highest since his days in the desert. Has this former 1st rounder lost his offensive game with his confidence or can he bounce back in Montreal?

Fantasy Outlook:

Mara heads into Montreal with low expectations. They hope he can be a top 4 Dman who can play some PP time. This could be a great environment for Mara to get his game back. Don't draft him but keep an eye on him through the waiver wire as he could surprise with some decent points and PIMS.

Fearless Forecast: 75GP, 7G, 22A, 29PTS, 105PIMS

The Toronto Maple Leafs have signed Mike Komisarek to a 5 year, 22.5 Million contract.

Komisarek leaves the Habs for their bitter rivals in the Big Smoke. Wanting the opportunity to play for US Olympic Head Coach Ron Wilson and GM Brian Burke, Komi has signed on to guard the crease in Toronto. Known for his tough, physical play, Mike is coming off a tough year which included a bum shoulder and humiliation at the hands of Milan Lucic. Look for Komisarek to provide a steady defensive presence on the revamped Leafs blueline.

Fantasy Outlook:  Komisarek is never going to put up huge fantasy points. While he skates well and moves the puck better then pundits credit him, he is best when playing a simple, chip the puck out game. He should also see his PIMs drop as he will no longer be the sheriff of a small Montreal team and is surrounded by a newly revamped, truculent Leafs line-up . This reduces his limited fantasy value even more. Look to draft Komi in the late rounds of roto leagues that reward penalties/hits etc.

Le Cammo

The Montreal Canadiens have signed Michael Cammalleri to a 5 year, $30 Million deal.

After acquiring playmaking centre Scott Gomez, Bob Gainey was looking for a couple of snipers on July 1st. He settled for a former 48 goal scorer in Brian Gionta and a guy who scored 39 Goals last year - Mike Cammalleri. Cammalleri also scored 34 goals two years ago and the Canadiens are confident he can be the finisher Gomez needs. At 27, Cammo is young enough to be a top 3 forward for the Habs through the length of his contract. The question is, can he still produce without big bodies like Jarome Iginla and Olli Jokinen creating space for him?

Fantasy Outlook: Cammalleri should be just fine in Montreal. He played a lot on Calgary's 2nd line last year but did most of his damage on the Powerplay. Montreal desperately needed a PP triggerman and Cammalleri is just that. While 5 on 5 should be a struggle for a potential hobbit line of Gionta-Gomez-Cammo, they should be able to leverage Andrei Markov's PP quarterbacking and produce great numbers. Look for all 3 players to be in the 70 point range. Cammalleri has the most potential of the 3 and could flirt with a PPG. Draft him in rounds 4-8 and hope he gets lots of PP time.

Hab-it Forming

The Montreal Canadiens have signed Brian Gionta to a 5 year, $25 Million dollar contract.

Gionta was an important part of the New Jersey franchise since his draft date. Last year he helped the Devil’s capture their divisional title and contributed 60 points in 81 games. Leaving the defence first Devil’s should help Gionta and his fantasy value.

Fantasy Outlook: Four seasons removed from his 48 goal season, Gionta is still a player that can contribute on a nightly basis. Paired with his old friend Gomez in Montreal should reignite the chemistry he had back when he had his best season. Look for Gionta to repeat his 60 points as a minimum and he may hit the 70 point mark. Draft him in the early middle rounds as he is still young and healthy and may have keeper value if he can exceed 60 points.

Je m'appelle Scott

Montreal trades Christopher Higgins, Ryan McDonagh, Pavel Valentenko & Doug Janik to New York for Scott Gomez, Tom Pyatt and Mike Busto.

Montreal landed their long sought-after #1 Centre on Tuesday, but it wasn't the Flying Frenchman that everyone expected. GM Bob Gainey felt the price was too high for Vincent Lecavalier and instead settled for an overpaid, underachieving top-line Centre. Gomez has struggled since signing in Broadway, unable to get close to the 84 points he put up in New Jersey during the 2005-2006 season.

Fantasy Outlook:

Scott Gomez - Gomez should actually rebound in Montreal. One of the best playmakers in the game, the Habs will look to surround him with a few snipers through Free Agency. Andrei Kostitsyn is the only guy currently on their roster who can put the puck in the net. If the Habs can find a sniper or two (Kovalev would look great on Gomez's wing), Scotty could be in for a decent bounce back year. Watch to see who Montreal signs to play with him. If they get a sniper or two, look for him to finish with 75 points and draft him in rounds 4-8.

Christopher Higgins - After scoring 27 goals in 2007-2008, many thought Higgins was ready to become a perennial 30 goal man. He struggled through injuries and inconsistency this past year however and finished with just 12 goals in 57 games. The move to the Big Apple should work wonders for this speedster with a great shot. A New York native, Higgins should re-discover his game playing on one of the Rangers top two lines. He seems like a great fit to flank the Rangers' Captain Chris Drury. Look for Higgins to finish near 60 points and draft him as a great bounce back candidate in rounds 8-12.

 

Ryan McDonagh - A key part of this deal for the Rangers, McDonagh projects as a great stay-at-home Dman who can move the puck. Unfortunately, that type of player provides little fantasy value in normal or keeper formats.

Booms & Busts - Playoffs - Bad Hab-its

The playoffs is a vital time for star players to show up and show that they have what it takes to take their teams to the promised land. It is also a time that star players disappear and get blamed for their teams’ short comings.

In this series I will analyze the fantasy booms and busts for the 2009 playoffs.

Montreal Canadiens

The hopes were high for the bleu, blanc et rouge for their century season. Having finished strongly last season, the Habs were immediate favorites to hoist the cup. It definitely was set-up to be a magical season. Their season started out strong and went downhill fast. Goaltender Carey Price battled injury and confidence issues, injuries to their top lines players, a mafia scandal involving players, a benching of their best player, an owner looking to sell, and a four game sweep by the Bruins topped it all off as a disaster. Looking ahead, the Canadiens have many personnel choices to make and as a fantasy owner things look cloudy.

Carey Price – overall had a disappointing season. Price looked strong in the playoffs and looked to get some of his confidence back that he was lacking in the middle of the season. Stick with this kid as he is still on his way up.

Alex Kovalev – One of the only players to show up during the playoffs, Kovalev’s future is uncertain. Look for him to return to one of his old clubs. When Kovalev wants to play he is dangerous. As a fantasy option he is still a keeper even though age is not on his side. Consider him a mid-round choice, maybe sooner if he signs in Pittsburgh.

Saku Koivu – The captain had a decent season. No longer a top tier player in the league, Koivu will have the option to return to Montreal next season being a UFA. A second line player at best, Saku should be looked at as a depth or waiver wire pick-up for owners.

Alex Tanguay – Even with an injury plagued season, Tanguay was able to put up 41 points in 50 games. Look for Montreal to make a strong pitch to retain his services next season. Owners should consider keeping him or drafting him in rounds 4 to 7, once the second tier players get selected. He will have another productive season wherever he ends up.

Christopher Higgins – At this point in his career Higgins is merely a depth player and offers little in the way of a fantasy option.

Andrei Kostitsyn – Implicated in a mafia scandal, Kostitsyn was a shadow of the player he was last season. At this point he is a keeper risk as he has fallen out of favor in Montreal and should be taken in the mid rounds in a draft.

Andrei Markov – Injured during the playoffs, Markov was second on the Habs during the regular season in scoring. Markov is a top d-man in the league and is a definite keeper and should be taken in rounds 3 - 5 in any draft.

Tomas Plekanec – Disaster is the only word to describe Plekanec’s season. Starting on the top line and ending up in the press box, he only scored 39 points in 80 games. Plekanec is no longer a keeper and should only be drafted as a depth move at this point. That being said, he could be a sleeper next season.

Mathieu Schneider – After being traded from Atlanta, Schneider turned Montreal’s power play around last season. This aging vet can still be a presence on any team. Owners should consider Schneider a possible keeper in deeper leagues or a mid round pick. It all depends where he signs in the off season.

Robert Lang – The trade from Chicago rejuvenated Lang and he was able to play an important role for Montreal before his season ending injury. Lang’s fantasy value at this point is no more than a waiver pickup.

Yannick Weber – The young d-man stepped up in the playoffs due to injuries and proved he can play. Keep an eye on him next season as he is an offensive minded rearguard.
